Filner: VA claims process needs radical changes
By Rick Maze - Staff writer

Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif., House Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairman said "improving the veterans’ claims process will require more than just hiring more staff."

Filner advocated the “IRS model,” which automatically accepts claims for disabilities rated at 30 percent or less, with only spot-checking for accuracy.

Also of note is Filner's comments from Report: VA lags on Agent Orange research

“The VA has a history of deny, deny, deny,” he said. “Then it’s cover-up, cover-up, cover-up. Then, when it’s unavoidable, they make them go through bureaucratic hoops. Jump, jump, jump. We ought to make the process easier for the veteran.”
